bin 312 Free Tasting Tonight, Thur, Oct 16th, 5 - 8 pm Musings of France The bin has been to Bordeaux. A couple of weeks ago, the bin took a short holiday to southwestern France. The itinerary included three days in the Dordogne region (home of foie gras – both duck and goose), a week in Bordeaux (home of France’s most exalted Cabernet and Merlot based wines), and a couple of days in Cognac (home of, well, Cognac). Join us this Thursday between 5 and 8 pm for a free tasting of wines from southwestern France. 2012 Chateau de Fontenille ($17.99) Entre Deux Mers Region The winery is located in a wine region called Entre Deux Mers which translates to “between two seas.” This wine is a blend of four grapes: Sauvignon Blanc (40%), Sauvignon Gris (20%), Muscadelle (20%), and Semillon (20%). The nose is aromatic and pure revealing citrus and peaches. It is well-balanced and has a slight pepperiness on the lingering, bright, juicy finish. 2012 Palissade Cabernet Sauvignon ($13.99) Atlantique Region Palissade (picket fence) is located 40 miles east of Bordeaux in a town of a mere 179 people. The nose of this 100% Cabernet is features savory aromas such as earth, anise, and baking spices. This is not an in-your-face fruit bomb, but is more subtle in its aromas and flavors. You might try this with chicken, pork, or other lighter fare meals. 2000 Chateau du Moulin Rose ($13.99) Côtes de Castillon Region No, that is not a misprint. We are pouring a 14 year old red wine from Bordeaux. And, no, that is not a misprint. You can latch onto a bottle for only $14. This wine is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and is from the exalted 2000 vintage. 2009 Chateau Les Grands Maréchaux ($22.99) Côtes de Bordeaux Region Bordeaux enjoyed a hot and excellent vintage in 2009. The wines are full of fruit and roundness making them very approachable young but structured and age-worthy as well. Look for black and red cherries on the nose and in the flavors with some red licorice as well. It is ripe and fleshy with medium to full body. You’ll find it silky and unctuous on the palate with a lingering finish. It is a blend of three classic Bordeaux grapes: 84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Parker called it an “absolutely outrageous sleeper of the vintage.”
