...#blacklivesmatter disrupts Oakland Mayor Libby Schaafs inauguration. 1) A black person in the US is killed by police, security guards or vigilantes every 28 hours (according to a study by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement). This is terrorism, and we call on our elected officials, particularly the new mayor, to end the racist terror police inflict on communities of color. 2) Mayor Elect Libby Schaaf was a city councilmember when Alan Blueford, a teenager in our community, was killed by an OPD officer with a history of brutality. Libby Schaaf was complicit in the cover up of Alans murder, allowing the Oakland Police Department to hide the police report from the family for six months. We have not forgotten Libbys role in shielding Alans murderer from accountability. 3) We call on all our elected officials, and Mayor Elect Libby Schaaf in particular, to work to end racist police terrorism by ending racial profiling, demilitarizing our police department, and forcing OPD to comply with federal standards for the protection of constitutional rights, which they have failed to do for the last 15 years.
