blingrunners/super-hero-fight-lung-cancer/ Be A Super Hero- Fight Lung Cancer! On January 9, 2015, Brandi Slota and Dawn Legg will be participating in the Walt Disney World 10K to raise money to fight lung cancer in memory of Dawn’s father, John Lisa. Proceeds from your participation in this virtual race will benefit the LUNGevity Foundation. Dawn’s father lost his courageous battle from lung cancer on May 20, 2014, at the young age of 65. He went to the doctor with what he believed to just be a cough from his cold, then was diagnosed in October 2013 with Stage 3B lung cancer. After several months of radiation and chemotherapy, we were made aware that it wasn’t slowing down the process and the cancer was now Stage IV, also spreading to his bones. No further treatment could be done and we were told the devastating news that he would not be with us for much longer. We were lucky enough to have him home with us for his last three weeks on Hospice. We made sure he was aware how thankful we were, and blessed to have had him in our lives, and how much we loved him. Lung cancer is responsible for the most cancer related deaths for both men and women throughout the world. It is estimated that 228,190 new cases of lung cancer in the United States were diagnosed and 159,480 deaths due to lung cancer occurred in 2013. Lung cancer claims more lives than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined; it accounts for 14% of all new cancer diagnoses and 27% of all cancer deaths. Unfortunately, lung cancer funding from the federal government in 2012 was a mere $1,442 per life lost as compared to colon, prostate and breast which were $6,489.00, $13,419.00 and $26,398.00 respectively. For this reason it is extremely important to help raise money for lung cancer research and awareness programs. We lost a great man on May 20, 2014. A husband, a father, a son, a brother, a grandfather and a great friend. Words cannot express how much he will be missed by us all. With your participation in this virtual race and the foundation’s efforts, we hope that another family does not have to say goodbye to a loved one way to soon, and we hope that future generation of sufferers have new medical treatments that will enable them to live long and productive lives or even help find a cure for this horrible disease. We greatly appreciate your donation!! Every dollar counts! Click here for information on the great work LUNGevity is doing to help fight lung cancer. The cost for this virtual race is $30. All participants will receive the beautiful 3 1/2 inch medal at the right. REGISTER NOW!
