The Chess Set – 8pm Electrifying good old Chess recordings, Steve Garde and Richard Roberts joined forces with the infamous rhythm section of Roy Daniel and Ace Follington to form The Chess Set. The band’s repertoire is drawn from the pre-eminent Blues label of the 50s and 60s, Chess Records, including tunes from Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon and Etta James. “There are only a handful of record labels that can claim to have changed the course of popular music and Chess Records is one of them,” said Richard Roberts. “The Chicago-based label was responsible for signing and developing some of the greatest names in music. Chess provided the blueprint for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones helping set the fundamental foundation stone for pop as we know it.” The Chess Set will be joined on stage by friends and luminaries of The Perth Blues Club so watch out for this one! Riddum Shakers – 10 pm Bob Patient and Gary Howard and Jim Frazer will be joining Steve Garde, Richard Roberts and Roy Daniel to do the last set as the Riddum Shakers. We could talk about the history of this band but it would take far too long to tell. The real story is the phenomenon created by the combination of six like-minded, experienced souls, getting on a stage and revelling in each moment as they swing and groove through their own takes on songs everybody loves! The relaxed confidence of knowing so well what it is to play in a band creates an atmosphere anyone can dig, dance and digest. The boys will take you through their hit songbook of the very best of the best; some, you may not have ever heard before, but you’ll wish you had; others you will recognise and rejoice in. Friday September 26, 2014 Flying Scotsman – Mt Lawley – 9 – 12 pm MattyTWall After recovering from an minor injury to his hand, MattyTWall is back and better than ever, returning to his monthly shows at The Flying Scotsman. Along with a fresh new bass player, Stephen Walker, and the awesome playing of drummer Jazz Miller, this blues power trio is taking things to the next level. A young man with an old soul: MattyTWall is connected to music with a wealth of history as he distills a diversity of genres into his own blues-influenced soul, jazz and rock signature. MattyTWall wrings raw emotions from single notes, stretching the strings of a LesPaul into sounds both persuasive and human. While the music that Matty plays has roots in the past, he is a very much an artist in the present. Through his reverence for historic musical forms, he is not emulating, but redefining these sounds, as he introduces classic genres to new listeners and invests them with his own trademark. With plans to record in Australia and the U.S., and to hit the road touring, MattyTWall is headed toward the proverbial destination of the bluesmen: the crossroads. “I am like an elastic band pulled really tight, ready to go,” he says. “That’s how I feel about my music.” - Blues guitar virtuoso MattyTWall seems to never stop gigging, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t seize the opportunity to catch him in action every chance you get - Travis Johnson, Xpress Magazine (Jun 04, 2014). -In my 10 years of doing sound at the Perth Blues Club, MattyTWall may be the closest to what I was hoping to find at a Blues Club anywhere . A 3-piece that really knows how to play and a repertoire where originals hold their own against the classics; that and soulful playing with great guitar tone make MattyTWall a band you should go and check out soon - Rik Van der Velde, Perth Blues Club (Jul 15, 2013) London Café and Bar – Currambine 7.00 pm - 9.30 pm G & G Acoustic Shenanigans Dave Gillam and Steve Garde Saturday September 27, 2014 Barnyard Benefit – Water for Africa - 7 – 10 pm 1 City Farm Place – East Perth Diamond Dave and the DooDaddies Prince of Wales – Bunbury 8:30 pm Dilip and the DAVs The Windsor Hotel - cnr Mill Point Rd and Mend St – opp. Perth Zoo, South Perth – 4 - 7pm Zydecats - zydecats.a The Zydecats combine Zydeco with Cat music- swing, jump blues and rock-a-billy, plus any other style that suits the line up including rock n roll, country blues, soul, r n b, Cajun and New Orleans R n B. With ex- Dude Ranch guitarist/ vocalist and rock n roll encyclopaedia Kent Hughes involved, this trio swelled to include the formidable rhythm section of Ric Eastman and Graeme Bell, along with a number of notable touring guests who sit in when theyre passing through town. John Meyer Blues Express – 8:45 pm John Meyer is an ‘old rocker’ at heart. For a guitarist who never envisaged playing beyond his twenties, he found it staggering that he was inducted into the WAMIA Rock ‘n’ Roll of Renown in 1993, and the WAM Hall of Fame in 2004, in recognition of his extensive music career. Born in Three Springs and growing up in Perth in the 1960s, Meyer was raised on jazz with a father who also played in a band. He first followed in his father’s footsteps, playing drums but soon moved onto guitar, citing the beguiling shape of the instrument for his change in preference. Meyer’s record collection extended from Eric Clapton to Muddy Waters while growing up to the sounds of The Beatles and Led Zeppelin but found the rawness of primal blues to be his passion. He still performs, mainly at the Perth Blues Club and Blue to the Bone, with a spin-off of the John Meyer Band called John Meyer’s Blues Express. In 1972, at the age of 17, Meyer formed Fatty Lumpkin with New York drummer, Al Kash and others. By 1977 the seminal progressive rock band was no more. Three of the original Fatty Lumpkin members reformed as Everest playing mostly originals. In 1979, Meyer left Everest to play in another band called Airforce, before he returned to the former, which once again underwent a line-up and name change to Saracen. In the early 1980s, Meyer left Saracen making the move to Sydney to play with bands like Swanee and Sharon O’Neil. He went on to record Southern Stars with the already well-established Rose Tattoo. Although his Rose Tattoo period was a hugely enjoyable time for Meyer, the band was already highly successful and had its own original direction. While Rose Tattoo paid the bills, Meyer still yearned for his own creative outlet. His first love was playing guitar, and with Rose Tattoo he was not afforded the creative freedom he wanted. He left Rose Tattoo in late 1986 with the intention of going solo. After a short break and issuing a self-titled independent album with the John Meyer Band in Perth, Matt Taylor - of the recently reformed and hugely successful 1970s blues band Chain - approached him to temporarily replace lead guitarist Phil Manning. Blues being Meyer’s first love he eagerly accepted the honour of filling the shoes of one of the greatest Australian blues guitarists and returned to Sydney in 1987 to play with a band he used to watch in his mid-teens. In 1991, Meyer left Chain and returned to Perth and the John Meyer Band, finally realising his dream of releasing a completely instrumental guitar album the following year. Meyer acknowledges the album as a personal yardstick, winning awards and being used on TV as background music for a number of motor sport programs. Now settled in Perth, John Meyer shows no signs of slowing down. Working six days a week recording in his studio, tutoring guitar privately, playing the occasional gig and, writing jingles for TV and radio. Steve Tallis and the Holy Ghosts – 10 pm Blues Shaman Steve Tallis returns to Perth after living in Paris since 2008 to launch his new album The First Degree. The album was produced by, and features, Skip McDonald (Little Axe) and Evan Jenkins. His most deeply personal album yet was recorded (live) and mixed in two days and three nights. Celebrating his 52nd year as a musician, Steves Holy Ghosts’ line-up is exciting, intense, interesting, challenging, and unique. It features Phil Bradley on guitar, Hans-Aage Deberitz on bass, Yugon Chobanoff on drums and of course, Steve Tallis on vocals and guitar. Steve started playing music in 1962: music is his calling. From birth he was surrounded by the music of his Macedonian ancestors and the ethnic music of Greece, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Listening to live music at picnics and dances as a small child opened his mind and spirit to trancelike rhythms, improvisation and chanting. He started listening to the sounds of the radio Bob Dylan, Them, Animals, Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, Jimi Hendrix, Yardbirds, Kinks, Loved Ones, Spectrum etc. He searched back further to the roots of the music he loved – and then back to the source – Africa. He has lived and performed in the USA, Europe, Mexico and Asia supporting some of the biggest names in music. His influences include Leadbelly, John Coltrane, Tim Buckley, Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra, Tony Williams Lifetime, Van Morrison, Howlin’ Wolf, Tom Waits, Jack Bruce, Kip Hanrahan and Bob Dylan. African, Indian, Haitian and Islamic music have all had a spiritual and rhythmic influence on his own work. His love of blues, gospel and a cappella field hollers is evident in both in his live shows and recordings. Awards include Songwriter of the Year, Most Original Work, and Album of the Year. Steve has been inducted into Western Australia Music Industry’s Hall of Fame and is featured in the books: Who’s Who of Australian Rock and Blues, Working Musicians and Further Down the Road. His eight CD boxed set Anthology Volume One: The Sacred Path of The Fried Egg Maylands To The Gates of Hell (1962-2001) is a piece of Australian music history. Steve was awarded an Arts WA Contemporary Music Fellowship in 2003 to study, compose and tour with master musicians in Africa, India and Greece. Steve Tallis is unique, fiercely independent and is not a man to be compromised.
