by Caroline A. Hinton, copyright, 2010, THE COMPUTER THAT TYPED THE WORD: ABUSE Adale was overjoyed! She had finally found a good man, Brian; and in addition to that, She had gotten someone to publish her first novel. Although it was Saturday and she did not have to go in to work, she showered and dressed in her usual office attire: A white silk blouse and a nice black skirt. She then sauntered into the little study and sat at the computer desk that held her nice, new laptop. Blushing and singing sofly to herself, she had to calm herself (get her love off of her mind), and focus on the fact that she was there to type her biography, a summary of her life story, that was to go on the back cover of her new book. She closed her eyes, for a second, and inhaled the scent of the morning air that was coming from the small opening in the window. Next, she lifted the cover on the computer and began to type her bio. Almost done, she instantly noticed that the computer seemed to have a mind of its own. The keys began to rattle and shake, and random letters and symbols began to appear: (srouerolslk3l2k1#%%!) on it! Standing, and moving the chair back from the desk, with shock, Adale yelled, What? Then mumbling to herself, she got up and went into the kitchen, almost stumbling. While there she poured herself a glass of water which she drank hurriedly, using the back of her hand to wipe her mouth. Seeing the number on the message board on the wall, she had a mind to call the computer company. But she thought against it-deciding that her computer was possessed, and that her trouble was a spiritual one. She decided that she would go back and lay hands on the computer and cast out the evil spirits that were undoubtedly, in it. And that she did, with equal parts of fear and faith. In response to that, the computer really lost it-went wild by rattling and shaking on the desk! The young woman fanned herself with a half sheet of white, copier paper, while getting up and standing next to the window and basking in the cool, faint breeze that was flowing in. Then, with anger and determination, she approached the computer desk, sat down calmly, and stabilized the computer by holding it down firmly. Blotting her forehead with a tissue, she began to type again. But before she could continue, the computer began to write: THERE IS MORE! She looked in awe, but being inspired by the warm, yellow sunlight, Adele decided to go on with her typing. Interrupting her again, the words THERE IS MORE., appeared on the screen. No, she did not write the words---but again, the computer wrote on its own volition! She decided that either she was losing her mind, or the equipment had gone mad. Being totally confused, she wondered what this could mean. Decidedly obstinate, she said, This computer is wrong; I have given a truthful summary of my life; what does it know anyway? It is just a machine. At that the letters ABUS.. appeared, and moving quickly, before it could continue, the young lady hurriedly closed the cover down on the laptop; and resting her head on it, she closed her eyes gently, fighting back a tear, and remembered......the ABUSE.
