by Frank Reeves On Sat. November 2, 2013 the EHS girls volleyball team met at Elizabeth High School for the Region 11 4A Volleyball Tournament. The teams consisted of Elizabeth High School (Cardinal), Frederick High School (Warriors) and Pueblo Centennial High School (Bulldogs). The winner would go to the State Tournament. The EHS team consisted of Coach-Russ Haman, Players-Chloe Peterson, Emily McChesney, Kayla Kagan, Sammie Montoya, Emily Luke, Shay Piper, Shawnee Montoya, Aly Morgan, Jordan Haan, Kyndal Greenlee, Sabra Ross, Kristen Jackson, Amy Lambert and Jordan Speicher. All teams played very well with good serving, defense, sets and occasional excellent saves. #1 Seed Elizabeth met #3 Seed Pueblo Centennial in the first series. Elizabeth lost the first game 25-27 but came back to win the next three, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-23. The next series between #2 Frederick and #3 seed Pueblo Centennial was a hard-fought battle but Frederick prevailed to face Elizabeth in the final series for the tournament victory. Elizabeth struggled in the first game losing to the Warriors 17-25. The Cardinals started slowly in the second game but rallied by holding extended serves with Chloe Peterson and Kayla Kagen. They reversed the margin of victory 25-16 of the first game. Then they continued to show character by winning the third game 25-10 by taking advantage of their momentum and aggressive play from the potential demoralizing effect of the first game loss. But the Warriors are a scrappy team and wouldn’t quit, winning the fourth game. The deciding game was played to 15 requiring a 2 point victory. Elizabeth Won! For the first time ever Elizabeth has won a berth to State in Volleyball! We wish them success. They should represent Elizabeth very well.
