by Jen Kelly - CrossFit Coach, Forever CrossFit The New Year is here. This is a time when we often look back at the things we’ve accomplished, or maybe things we wished we’d done and then we make those dreaded New Years resolutions. I have nothing against resolutions. I think it’s a useful exercise to consider what we want out of life and make a promise to ourselves to make it happen. What I think makes resolutions useless, and in particular, making weight loss resolutions, is not having a plan to actually succeed. To lose weight you must make a weight loss plan. Most people stop at either making a public or private declaration of the things they plan on doing in the next 365 days. Slightly more successful people actually write down their goals. The most successful people also have a plan of how they will accomplish their goals. You have possibly heard about SMART fitness goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time based) which is a great place to start as you are drafting up your weight loss resolutions. The next step would be to create long-term and short-term fitness goals. This time next year when you think back on 2015, what would you be most proud to say that you conquered and accomplished? This is your long-term goal. Now, think about short-term goals, daily, weekly, monthly, that will get you there. Most big things are accomplished with small amounts of consistent effort. There are no overnight miracles happening here. Getting what you want takes work. My last piece of advice is to find some sort of external source of motivation to keep you honest. Having a fitness partner to work on your resolutions with you will help keep you working toward success. If you have a fitness goal, consider signing up for a race or a competition. Having an end date and an event to train for can keep you on track. There are so many ways to test your fitness, choose something you enjoy that matches up with your goals, a 5k, marathon, lifting competition, CrossFit competition, figure competition, obstacle course race, anything that will remind you that you need to keep working hard day in and day out. And then please, don’t forget to celebrate your successes no matter how small. Express gratitude for all that 2014 has taught you and look forward to 2015.
