by nancy c. FOR THOSE CONTEMPLATING MARRIAGE Therefore shall a man leave his father & his mother, & shall cleave unto his wife: & they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:24 Honour thy father & thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. (Exodus 20:12) The same God who commands us to leave our parents also commands us to love & honor them. Leaving parents doesnt mean neglecting, forsaking or abandoning them. Leaving parents doesnt mean that you forget or stop providing for them. Leaving means you establish your own independent family unit free from parental influence & interferences. Parents also need their independence & privacy. Gods divine command to leave doesnt contradict culture because both require us to respect & care for our parents, however the will of God for a prosperous marriage includes leaving! Yes circumstances like sickness & old age may dictate that you live with parents. Its our obligation, honor & blessing to joyfully house, provide & care for them. But parents should know that they are guests & should not interfere. Parents should respect the decisions of their son-in-law or daughter-in-law.
