call it what you want...a sewer expansion program or a septic tank elimination program...its one in the same!! Heres a program that was initiated in 2011 in the City of Stuart, FL to eliminate septic tanks. The driver to move this program forward was the potential for contamination of the area groundwater and surface water bodies by the septic tanks. The selected technology to replace the septic tanks was a low pressure sewer system, and individual residential grinder pump stations. This option was selected because it was more cost effectlve than the traditional gravity sewer collection system and the associated sewage lift stations and force mains. Could this same type of project be performed in Central Florida to eliminate septic tanks?? Of course it could....BUT, besides money for an extensive capital improvement program, its necessary to have an existing wastewater treatment plant to convey the sewage to...which didnt exist back when the developers built the subdivisions and is precisely why they installed septic tanks in the first place!!!
