can we ever trust umbrella SRC....THIS MEMO WAS WRITTEN ON THE DAY OF ELECTIONS TO CHEAT STUDENTS INTO VOTING FOR UMBRELLA ......DID ANY OF THESE EVER MATERIALISED? SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS ARE FINALLY BACK...Yes we can, yes we did it, who says the Umbrella led SRC is incompetent, March 23, 2013 Greetings to the beloved student community. Allow me to share with you the greatest and historic news of my presidency by announcing that the much needed SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS are back! Following an emergency SENATE meeting yesterday(20/03/2013) convened at the request of the industrious SRC, the SENATE have unanimously agreed to re- implement the examinations. The Student Community should remember that the past 2011/12 Umbrella SRC led by Mr. Richard Khumoekae robustly advocated for the re- introduction of the supplementary exams and the issue led to student demonstrations last year. The current SRC took the matter forward and negotiated with Senate to achieve the agenda which was raised by the Richard led SRC during the strike. The prophets of doom who dismissed the demonstrations as baseless are now humbled as the demonstrations are now bearing fruits to the student community. It is in this regard that the UMBRELLA led SRC is grateful to the unusual cooperation portrayed by Prof. Fako and fellow senators in addressing this sensitive issue which is at the core of our academic survival. Senators have resolved that all Deans must convene and finalize all logistics regarding the implementation of the much needed supplementary examinations. It gives us joy as the Umbrella-led- SRC to have finally achieved this milestone achievement which shall assist student in their academic journey. Finally the student revolution staged last year has finally achieved its objectives. There are some political opportunists and scavengers who masquerade as analysts who dismiss this historical achievement of the SRC as propaganda and electioneering. That is cheap talk! The negotiations between the SRC and UB Management regarding supplementary examinations have been on motion and the student community was aware of such process. The decision to re- introduce supplementary examinations was taken yesterday at Senate and it had to be communicated to the student community regardless of whether the elections were looming or not. The SRC cannot be castigated for announcing this achievement to the student community. On other academic issues, the issue of ON- LINE REGISTRATION which has been going on over years has been completed and it will be in force in the next semester. This will solve the headache problem of long lines during the registration process. The Book store issue have been taken to the COMPETTITION AUTHORITY for probing. It is clear that the Bookstore Monopoly is hurting the students. The prices are unbelievable exorbitant and yet we are forced to buy at the Bookstore. The SRC is aware that senior government officials and top brass of the University have economic interests in the Bookstore since they are shareholders. This explains the reason why UB students are literally forced to buy study materials at this Bookstore despite its crazy prices. If we all remember, one of the issues raised during the strike was the closure of the famous 411 STUDENT BAR, which the then SRC was against. When we took office, we continued to plead with the authorities that the student bar must not be closed but rather re-located to a better place on-campus. The SRC have achieved its objective and proud to announce that the 411 Bar will be re-located to Curry Pot and/or Moghul and it will be transformed from a shebeen into a much better STUDENT LOUNGE. The student community is hereby advised to ask at their respective faculties on these academic issues so as to get first hand information on these issues and to vindicate the SRC. There are certain pseudo- movement’s on-campus who denounces the achievements of the SRC. We wonder if such movements anticipated our failure. The Umbrella led SRC have proved our detractors wrong and effectively represented the student interests to the best of our ability. We will only be judged by the students, whom we serve, not puppets of the management and government. As the Umbrella led SRC, we are honoured to have diligently executed the mandate of the students and safeguarded your academic welfare. We thank you for the support and everything that you provided to us in advocating for this issue, without you, we are nothing. This victory is yours; we are only the custodians and your servants. Umbrella led SRC have as usual demonstrated that it is the only progressive and forceful movement in the University of Botswana. It is written in the walls for everyone to see! Thank you Le tla ratwa ke modimo le batho!
