center of attraction @ Assam Assam is one of the Seven Sister States of India and is located at North – Eastern region of the country. Assam shares its International border with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Assam has 27 districts and Dispur is the state capital. Tea plantations, rich flora – fauna, petroleum resources, silk and various biodiversity are some of the main highlights of Assam. It is also home of the world famous and rare one horned rhinoceros, the remarkable Majuli Island, ancient Ahom architectural marvels and numerous Golf courses backed by beautiful heritage. Brahmaputra River is the main water body of the state and forest of Sal trees along side of the river offers lush green environment in the region. Assam is stretched over two regions known as Western Assam and Central Assam. These two regions were known as Kamarupa (Western Assam) and Davaka (Central Assam) during 4th century. During 1905 – 1911, after the partition of Bengal, two new proveniences were created as Assam and East Bengal and in 1947, Assam became a new state of Indian Government. Assam has a hybrid traditional culture developed due to cultural assimilation of different ethno-cultural groups under various politico-economic systems in different periods of history. Bohag Bihu, Magh Bihu, and Bwisagu are some of the main festivals celebrated in Assam. Bihu dance and the Bagurumba are very popular folk dances of Assam and are danced in festivals held during the spring and other seasons; dances like the Bhortal dance, the Ojapali dance are also very well known in the region. Assam has a rich tradition of crafts; presently, Cane and bamboo craft, bell metal and brass craft, silk and cotton weaving, toy and mask making, pottery & terracotta work, wood craft, jewel making, musical instruments making etc are some of the popular fine arts of Assam.
