city-journal.org/2015/eon0111sk.html ( 1 2 January 2 0 1 5 , Monday ) - - An ultra - brief history of EDITORIAL CARTOONING courtesy of CITY JOURNAL s STEFAN KANFER . Any retrospective on politically provocative cartoons of old has to mention that Nineteenth Century illustrator , THOMAS NAST [ see one of Nast s cartoons below ] , whose favorite target was the public - trough - emptying corruptocrat WILLIAM MARCY BOSS TWEED , leader of the New York political machine TAMMANY HALL . Tweed himself was painfully aware of Nast , as the illustrations held Tweed up to ridicule in a way that no written editorial could . [ Boss Tweed was depicted in the MARTIN SCORSESE film GANGS OF NEW YORK , imdb/title/tt0217505/?ref_=nv_sr_1 . ] Personally , I seldom look at editorial cartoons , as they be simplistic . Some , in fact , are downright infantile , particularly those of GARRY TRUDEAU [ scroll back to 3 1 December 2 0 1 4 / 1 January 2 0 1 5 for a fitting critique of Doonesbury and its creator , who considered it just grand to use his daily fishwrap panels to exploit tragedy like the Son Of Sam murders as grist for his , uh , humor . ] That , however , is no justification at all to suppress them - nor to attack their creators and shoot them dead .
