clyp.it/rzpvzz5l Broadcast records manufactured between 1927 - 1933 by the Vocalion Company and then Crystalate after Vocalion was taken over have come in for a bit of stick in the last day or two, but the quality did improve markedly over time. The initial issues, running from cat. no 100 to 500 approximately did have higher levels of surface noise and were very prone to groove wear, but records with catalogue numbers above 500 generally play much better with lower surface noise, and do not seem to suffer the distortion and groove wear that affected earlier issues. Around this time though Vocalion started to use a different quality of shellac and the finished records were rather thinner and more liable to breakage, which hasnt helped their survival rate. They also increased the diameter from 8* to 9* which meant that fewer records were recorded right up to the label where the groove wear problems become most apparent. From approx. catalogue no 850 after being taken over by Crystalate, the recording quality is more akin to Crystalates Imperial label, but is still a big improvement on the earliest records. Im uploading two Broadcast records from different eras to show the difference. Firstly, here is Harry Bidgood & his Broadcasters with Gonna get a girl, recorded on December 30th 1927. This is a clean copy but the inevitable groove wear becomes noticeable in the final section of the record. Vocal refrain is by Ramon Newton.
