Host and Chair: Lord Boswell of Aynho The lecture is one of a series arranged by the Council for Education in the Commonwealth to explore the 2013 Commonwealth theme ‘Opportunity through Enterprise’. Asha Kanwar will explore how alternative approaches to learning, including through open, distance and technology-based means, can enhance livelihoods among disadvantaged peoples. She will illustrate her presentation with accounts of Commonwealth of Learning (COL) initiatives that seek to engage social, financial and human capital, creating opportunities that empower poor communities through sustainable entrepreneurship, highlighting their implications for women. The Commonwealth of Learning (COL), celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year, was created by Commonwealth Heads of Government to encourage the development and sharing of open learning, distance education, knowledge, resources and technologies. The Government of Canada hosts the COL, and its headquarters are in Vancouver, British Columbia. Asha Kanwar is distinguished as an academic and researcher in open and distance learning. As President and CEO of COL since June 2012, she is the first woman appointed to lead a Commonwealth inter-governmental organization. Prior to joining COL she was Professor and Pro-Vice Chancellor at the Indira Gandhi National Open University in Delhi and served as a consultant to UNESCOs Regional Office for Education in Africa (BREDA).
