copied with permission.. Something to think about...good advice! Dogs do not have a conscience. They do not know right or wrong, only boundaries and limits that are placed by other dogs, people or their environment. I have heard and read many times he knows that he is not allowed to do that or she knows better. I even used to say this myself and found myself getting angry when my dog got in the trash when I was out of the room. Instead, I challenge you to question what will stop my dog from doing whatever?. Either restrain them from the behavior by environment (crate), or supervise and correct the behavior (train) when you are present. I no longer expect my dogs to not get in the trash, get on the couch or drink out of the toilet when I am not present. My dogs are happier for it. I am happier for it. I dont walk through the door anymore to a dog hiding from me or acting fearful because they did something they knew they shouldnt . Dogs live in the now without weighing consequences. Make their now safe by providing limits. Just my thoughts after seeing others struggling.
