courtesy Roy Daniels always a pleasure to read his take on current affairs !!! I live in a relatively posh colony in Agra, less than a kilometer from the Taj, and the sewage system here is breaking down. In fact you are going to see more of this very soon. This Sewer Diver will be in great demand. As we add toilets, existing sewage systems will break down and crumble under the load, and thousands such sewer divers will be necessary. You could say the toilet campaign will make this a booming business. And already, they are charging much more than the Rs 250 per day this post says they charge. My neighbours go to clusters where people of the lowest casts live scouting for people who will clear their sewage lines with bamboo poles and wheelbarrows for the refuse, for less money. Soon fleets of trucks will be deployed everywhere to suck up sewage from private septic tanks in clustered urban colonies. Indias sewage systems need to be strengthened before the hundreds of thousands of toilets are built. And new sewage treatment plants have to be created. Instead of bringing dignity to this mans life we should eliminate his necessity altogether. In fact Bindeshwar Pathak was inspired to start the Sulab programme after watching the plight of these people and night soil carriers. Remember, if all the houses on the banks of the Ganga had toilets, the river would have vanished long ago, submerged by feces. Presently, half the sewage that goes into the Ganga is untreated and half of India does not have a toilet. If everyone had a toilet the untreated sewage going into the Ganga would triple overnight. p
