creationsbyelder/node/44 Price: $295.00 (USD) ABOUT THE PIECE This is my first piece in my Illusions in Glass series. This piece has been created as a piece of table top art, in other words it is a free standing piece. This piece contains some very advanced glass called Dichroic glass. This glass is produced in a very high tech environment and is produced by adding micro-layers of metals or oxides. Because of the processes used to produce this phenomenal glass, it is far more expensive than other art glass. Generally running in the neighborhood of $1 to $2 per square inch, retail. Due to the production process involved the final glass is quite spectacular. And has some very interesting properties. The primary property that Dichroic glass has is the ability to shift colors depending upon the several factors, which include; the angle at which the glass is viewed, the source of lighting and whether the lighting is reflected or transmitted through the glass. Each piece of glass can go through a mired of coloration depending upon the above factors. As you will notice the Dichroic glass has been introduced within the piece at various angles. This gives a wonderful three dimensional feel to the piece. In addition, because of the attention to detail given in the production of the piece, the viewer of the art will be inundated with changes in appearance of the piece as they walk around it and view it from various angles and vantage points. Another effect that the Dichroic glass has is a holographic feel. In other words, with the various angles that have been used in the production of this piece, the artist has captured areas that when viewed, will make the viewer of the art feel like they are seeing more detail than exists. This reflective/holographic effect will also bring the surrounding areas into play for the viewer, creating a stunning effect. The construction method is copper foil with zinc frame work. The piece has been treated with a black patina which brings the lineation of the design out and really helps the three dimensional properties of the piece pop. In the center of the open piece is a highly polished piece of glass that magnifies what is viewed through it. This gives a stunning effect to the piece when viewed at various angles. The glass that makes up the main body of the piece are semi-translucent and iridized. The semi-translucent properties of the glass adds a flow and wispiness to the piece. While the iridized finish adds yet another component of color change within the piece, as the viewer looks upon the piece at various angles. Overall size is; Approximately 19 wide by 14 tall by 5 deep NOTE IN REGARDS TO CLEANING A damp cotton cloth with diluted mild dish soap is the best way to clean the piece overall, and make sure to dry the piece immediately. In addition, to remove any streaks be sure to use a non-ammonia glass cleaner such as Sprayaway, and wipe dry any residual cleaner. ABOUT THE ARTIST I have been doing Stained Glass work, and working with glass as a medium, off and on since 1988. I was very heavy into art while in school which lead my shop trades teacher to ask me if I would volunteer some of my time to do artwork and help in the production of some stained glass panels for a display to compete in a state championship for VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). I said yes and found myself working in a local stained glass studio, with one of the sweetest little ole ladies around, her name was Beatrice Stebbing. I guess she saw something in me because she contacted me and asked me if I would like to come to work for her, and I said yes. So while still in High School I started working for her, and there began my career in stained glass. In the years since I have worked for other studios as well as operating my own studio for many years. I am known for my unique 3 dimensional glass sculptures as well as very unique and one of a kind designs. I enjoy creating interactive art, which is why you will find me creating items such as; pyramids that open, wands that can be held, sculptures that contain kaleidoscopes all of which promotes the viewer of the art to actually interact with the art. I find that glass as a medium is very expressive and enjoy pushing the limits of what the preconceived notions and limitations of art glass are. I utilize age old techniques and combine those techniques with modern materials. Adding to that my years of experience, my goal is to create works of art that will stand the test of time, which will allow them to be handed down from generation to generation. I am skilled in not only the production, but the instruction of the following; - Leading (Traditional leaded glass work using lead construct as well as zinc, copper, brass and more) - Copper foil (Tiffany style) - Dalle de verre glass (aka faceted slab glass) - English weaving (a solderless technique of construction where all but he border is woven) - Beveled and custom beveling - Etching (multilayer sandblast etching as well as acid etching) - Carving (carving into thick glass using a sandblaster which gives depth and detail) - Torch work (aka lamp working and glass bead making) - Kiln work (fusing and slumping) - Painting and firing (age old techniques that allows the addition of detail to glass via painting and then firing in kiln) - 3 dimensional work (kaleidoscopes, boxes, lampshades and sculptural type work) - Restorations (skilled in the restoration of turn of the century works) - Repairs (if it is broken, I can almost always fix it) If you are wanting a custom piece created, or have a piece that is damaged and requires repair, contact me for a quote.
