day 5/5: gratitude practice 1. new socks. as a person who walks as often as possible, socks that dont rub or fall down or bunch or get sweaty are critical. as i was putting stuff away after my move i noticed i had walked every pair threadbare, and some had lost their mates. the metaphor was not lost on me. so i says to myself, i says: go nuts, girl. treat yourself. new socks in a new town. right now. i hied me to EMS for some lovely smartwools (they say their sheep are happy) and now every step is positively springy. my feet are happy, cushioned, and dry. its a little thing but it brings me joy. so thank you, new socks, and thank you smartwool. 2. my doctor. as a kid, i would fall asleep in the study with the medical encyclopedia on my face. its fair to say i have a deep fascination with the body and all matters related to health and dis-ease. but i also have a very active imagination. doctor bob lets me tell him about every little zing and twitch and ache and never makes me feel bad about being the hypochondriac we both know i am. most patient, accommodating, accessible healer ive ever had, and also a dear friend. thank you, doctor bob, for keeping me calm, hale, and whole. 3. the barter system. right now, im getting guitar lessons in exchange for gardening. when times are tight, and even when its not, its a blessing to be able to exchange services and skills and leave the dollar out of it. just seems like everybody wins. if only i could convince honda to accept folk concerts in exchange for a car payment! but yay for the barter system, and the meaningful little ways it connects us. this has been a great exercise. bonus gratitude today to Deana Sherry who tagged me to do this. thanks, ds! ill pass the baton to Greta Candelori, Gretchen Schultz, and Dan Kauffman to continue, if they have the time and motivation, and i will do this daily, privately, because i think it makes me a happier person. best wishes and blessings on us all.
