declan macmanus was ever such a clever boy- for awhile. i havent paid him much mind since the 80s though- and he seems like a dick- but his hot wordy streak of phenomenal songs and cohesive albums from the late 70s through about the mid 80s is without compare. we would wait for the next elvis costello album to be released- and jump the bus into boston to hunt it down. it wouldnt leave the turntable for months. i cant recall the last time i was ever that anxious for an album to be released. what does elvis do now? i dont know. i dont care. and amid the messy chaos and half assed ethos of punk the attractions were a tight group of musicians. every time i saw them live- and i lost count- they were great. once they had a giant roulette wheel with his songs listed on it. elvis invited fans on to the stage to spin it then they would perform the song that came up. if i have the vinyl record i usually will not buy the cd unless it has been remastered or, as they do, has bonus material i do not have.( i really like demos and outtakes.). finally found Trust. no one packs the one liners into a song like elvis- and clubland alone has a handful of his best. the album did not Produce the Hits- in fact theres not one Hit Song. and he went off on an ill advised tangent of doing country albums and assorted I Am a Serious Musician Not an Angry Nasty Irish Prick outings and he lost me. but while it lasted he was so white hot. his outtakes were better than most anything playing on the radio in the states at the time. the long arm of the law/ slides up the out skirts of town... one of the best lines in a song, ever...
