"...does increasing pay actually affect intrinsic motivation - TopicsExpress

"...does increasing pay actually affect intrinsic motivation negatively? Intrinsic motivation can manifest as job interest, enjoyment, curiosity on the job, i.e. you are more likely to like the job because you focus on the work itself, or in the example of a civil/public servant,”I enjoy my job because I enjoy serving the public”. This is very much the crux of intrinsic motivation. It is important as it is a greater determining factor of the worker’s level of engagement, more so than extrinsic motivation. The answer to that question provides a sobering wake-up call to reality. Edward Deci from the University of Rochester and colleagues performed a meta-analysis of 128 studies. They found that for every standard deviation increase in reward (dollars), the intrinsic motivation actually decreases by 25%! What this analysis shows is the negative impact of monetary incentives on intrinsic motivation."
