ello Darling! Its me Luv – it’s Reggie! Darling, I finally answered the big question today! Reg, how did ya end up in Purgatory & no wind up mate Lads, ever hear of Jacqueline Susann & Valley of the Dolls? youtube/watch?v=oDOaK_24doo Theme from Valley of the Dolls by Dionne Warwick Gotta get off, Gonna get off from this ride Gotta get hold, Gonna get hold of my pride When did I get, Where did I... How was I caught in this game? When will I know? Where will I... How will I think of my name? Lads, most know I was born in Liverpool and raised in Philadelphia, but most dont know that I spent time in New York City trying to get a book off the ground in 1966. Ya see, in those days, I was a just a kid trying to get the attention of anyone in the publishing business... And I mean anyone! So, in order to make ends meet I took a job as an errand boy at The New York Times for 10 quid a week. And although I was a nobody in a sea of somebodys I loved every minute of it, every minute. Ah, I still miss those days lads! Well, one day Im running around the office of the fella that was responsible for putting together The New York Times Best Sellers List when I literally bumped into Ms Susann walking down the hall. Think about that lads? Jacqueline Susann! And let me tell ya something... She was everything I dreamed she would be... Beautiful, smart and as gracious as anyone can be under the circumstances. Excuse me Ms Susann, Im so sorry It was the only thing I could think of saying... Thats alright young man, whats your name? Reggie, Ms Susann, Im a big fan! And thats how I first met her. I knew she was from Philadelphia so, I threw in some comment about West Philadelphia HS that I knew would get her attention when she suddenly says... Reggie, would you like to join my manager & I for lunch? And it was at that lunch when Ms Susanns manager first heard of my job of running errands at the Times. But, when he heard that I had access to the office of the fella that put together the Times Best Sellers List he leaned over to me and handed me his card saying... Kid, do me a favor? When you get a chance, give me a call - maybe I can help you with your book someday Well, I called him and he got straight to the point... Kid, I need you to do me a favor... The Times has a list of book stores that it calls for sales numbers each week and theyre scattered all around the country. These book stores give em totals of actual purchases by the buying public by author. The next time youre bringing coffee to that fella who works on the Times best seller list... would you take a look around and see if you can find that list of book stores they call? And lads? That was the beginning of the end for me. Ya see, it was only later that I found out that Ms Susanns manager sent everyone he knew to each book store on the list and had them purchase every copy of Valley of the Dolls on their shelves propelling it to Number 1 on The New York Times Best Sellers List eventually selling some 30 million copies worldwide. The good news about what happen? Ms Susann never knew about her managers mischief. She was talented and beautiful and I loved her work. She didnt need him or his shenanigans. And thats how I got here lads... How was I caught in this game? When will I know? Where will I... How will I think of my name? Tell me...
