en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akhenaten Pharaoh who suddenly upended egyptian religion in his reign in favour of a kind of monotheistic religion based around Aten, the solar disc, a previously minor aspect of the sun god Ra. originally aten was only primary but as time went on akhenaten promoted aten more and more to the exclusion of other gods. he promoted the idea of himself as the mediator between aten and the regular world - not quite a god, but close. during his reign official art adopted a more feminine style with things like elongated earlobes and long faces - speculation has revolved around whether he had some kind of unusual genetic disorder or possibly that it was an intentional choice to present him as androgynous, as both the mother and father of egypt, through aten. the page is filled with speculation, [citation needed]s and contradictory claims because even among scholars what actually happened during his reign is far from clear outside of it being very interesting and unusual. after his death the cult of aten practically ended and the pharoahs of the next dynasty scrubbed his name (and those of his successors) from every historical record they could. the details of his death and what exactly happened afterwards are very murky too. lots of interesting stuff here. he came from a pretty interesting period of history too: Tutankhamen was his son, his queen was Nefertiti en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nefertiti whose likeness is one of the most famous examples of egyptian art and his great great grand aunt was en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatshepsut hatsheput, the first woman ruler who we know much about (and who was an incredibly successful ruler by all accounts)
