enjoyed seeing The Quiet Man on Channel 4. Its a wonderful film. The bit where the parish priest tells the people to cheer like Protestants as Mr Playfair and the Bishop pass by is very amusing. The whole thing is well observed. The name Playfair has an obvious meaning. Cong, where the film was shot, was a centre of what came to be known as The Second Reformation, during the nineteenth century, when Lord Ardilaun sent scripture readers out among the local Irish speaking population. Initially, the mission met with some success and many people joined the Church of Ireland. The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Tuam then started an opposition, which led to boycotting and violence. Some families were brave and remained true to their consciences but many reverted to Roman Catholicism. Some of those who wished to retain their new allegiance found it necessary to relocate. It was hard to sustain local communities but in one or two places critical mass was maintained. Places like Tourmakeady had families by the name of Burke, Costello, King and OConnor who remained staunchly Church of Ireland.
