eventy years ago, on Jun. 22, 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. On that day, most of the Soviet warplanes were crowded together on a small number of airfields; according to historians, many of those planes were destroyed by the Germans and most of the fighter pilots waiting in the wings were not very experienced. The Soviet Union was in desperate need of talented pilots.
