excerpt: As the one-year anniversary of the chemical spill that polluted the drinking water of 300,000 West Virginians approaches, a new study has identified oversights in the state government and Centers for Disease Control’s response to the disaster. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, looked at the health problems reported by residents immediately after the spill and found that the CDC didn’t consider the impacts exposure to the fumes of Crude MCHM — the coal-related chemical that spilled into West Virginia’s Elk River from a Freedom Industries chemical storage site on January 9 — could have on residents whose water was affected. The federal government said at the time that there wasn’t enough information on the chemical to draft an inhalation standard, and the Environmental Protection Agency didn’t create one until October.
