excerpts from a response to the criticism regarding the “decreasing crowds” and “not getting anything out of it” and “what are you going to change?” comments in turkey. i thought i would give it a try and translate. “we are in the middle of a civil resistance friends. don’t forget that these people have placed their own in all levels of government in the last ten years and they are really powerful. it will take time. i am more for small but determined steps, just like they have done it. we may not see the same crowds in public places. resistance is not about waiting in front of the police line, for them to gas you. we have reached another situation and there is a lot going on apart from confronting the police ... i will tell you where the crowds are: some of them are participating in forums and assemblies in their neighborhoods some of them are producing writings and visuals at their computers some of them are creating their personal events some of them are writing petitions some of them are going to ankara some of them are giving interviews to the foreign press some of them are making donations some of them are making translations some of them are talking to anybody they meet on the streets and trying to explain the truth some of them are in rural areas and informing their relatives some of them are starting summer schools some of them are trying to create something entirely new some of them are not doing anything but they decided to be an election helper next time. they decided not to go on vacation on election day. they have learned to respect different opinions, to listen to them. they have learned how not to alienate people with different ideologies. they have learned not to be egoistic in a panic situation and not to put others at risk by running away. they have learned not to put down people because of their gender or gender preference. and many doors of mindfulness have been opened... do not forget that we live in a country where the media is non-existent, the public has been silent for many years and stupefaction is at a summit for economical and sociological reasons. i remind you that it hasn’t been even a month since the resistance started. do not be demoralized, we have accomplished a lot in a short time. this is just the start, the struggle continues.”
