fReAkEr$ of Kochi! Most of us from Kerala in fb came to know about the birth of this new species a few years back, around 2009-10, when we started receiving personal messages from strangers which went – “broooo, pLz lAik ma pRofile pyic” (Translation – Brother, Please like my profile pic). The script which looked inspired partly from J.R.R.Tolkien’s middle earth, pointed to their origins being somewhere near the middle of Kerala – Kochi. Those outside fb first realised the existence of this species when they spotted few groups wearing green shirts and low-waist multi- coloured pants (yellow on one leg, red on another), strolling past them inside the newly built malls. They were heard addressing each other as budddddy, broooo, machaaan, dooood…..and freaaakeeee. Those in fb were in for more shock as several “fReakerZ” pages started appearing, with each of them dedicated to a specific district or even junction. Thus we had groups like fReakerZ of Kochi, Kottayam freeeeeaaaks, FrEaKeRzZ~MoNvI lA, KUNNAmaNgalam FreEeak$ and even ThAmPuranMukk freeeeakz. Now, all that these pages had were pictures, and more pictures – highly edited photographs of guys holding guitars (always in an unplayable position) or on bikes, with captions like – “hι! αиy1 αиd єvєяy1 who thιиks thαt thєy hαvє thє stylє αиd thє looks to dαzzlє αиy1 oя αtlєαst suм1 сαи єияoll ιи thє ρlαyьoy яєgιмєиt...” (actual caption copied from a page). Embossed on the photo were names of the model, stylist and photographer. Coming to the style, it was almost always about the HAIR. The average height of Kerala youth went up by a few inches after the advent of freakers! Another unavoidable element of their style was a t- shirt/wrist band/ bag depicting either Bob Marley or the Jamaican flag. Now, if you asked one of them about the person on their t-shirt, they will tell you –“അയ്യേ അറിയില്ലേ ബ്രോ , വലിയ ഫ്രീക്കനും കഞാവടിയനും ഒക്കെ ആണ്!!” (You don’t know? He’s a famous freak and drug addict). Their “style” had one unintended side effect – the Kerala Police associated Marley and the Jamaican flag with ganja and started cracking down on anyone wearing such t- shirts or wrist bands (even people who actually listened to his music). Things started getting tough for poor metal-heads in Kerala too. Till the arrival of the freaks, metal-heads were considered as social outcasts, but they were not disturbed by the outside world. Added to that, the Kerala Police’s suspicion of bob Marley t-shirts extended to any t-shirt in black color, which is practically the entire wardrobe of a normal metal-head. The fReakz soon carved out a position for themselves in Kerala society as the representatives of modernity. It all culminated in the “cute” protest in support of moral policing at Marine drive on Sunday. Ironically, they did not realise they looked “immoral” for the moral police vigilantes and got thrashed roundly. The story of the freaks did not end there. Their leader promptly went back home and put up a brave selfie of his injuries. It is now being shared across all the fReAkeR$ pages across all districts and junctions in Kerala. A fReAkeR$ revolution might be in the making, pretty soon!!
