The month-long festival has raised controversy due to the large number of animals killed – up to 500,000 over two days. Thousands of buffaloes, mostly calves, were sacrificed at an enclosed field close to the temple of Goddess Gadhimai, a Hindu deity, believed by devotees to grant wishes if they sacrifice animals and birds.
