Whats Christmas to a squaddie, when hes out there serving you? just take a different look at things, and gain a soldiers view. first off hes out of country, and certainly out of sight. he won,t be hanging stockings, with the kids on Christmas night. his bed will be more humble, as will his new surrounds. heat and light a luxury, to those out on the ground. his Christmas lunch is hurried, but welcome just the same. no presents by the fireside, all labelled with his name. there is no festive sweater, for everyone to jest. just combat rig and webbing, and of course an armoured vest. the flashing lights in his world, are tracer and illume. no sign of sparkling tinsel, that reflects around the room. for you a party popper, for him a mortar round. the hostile crack of AKM, a most unfriendly sound. while you enjoy the party, and all the wine and beer. he,ll try and make the best of it, without the festive cheer. don,t curse him for his absence, he,d be there, if he was able. and gladly swap the battlefield, to join you at the table. so when at last he,s home, and he,s spinning you a yarn. remember, hes not the only saviour, who spent Christmas in a barn. ©Dave Capps......
