... firstly Id like to say, John Bonham is probably the most influential drummer in hard rock, ever ..... cause this is a very touchy and biased subject to many musicians but while discussing (with a co - Drunken Drummer) whod be a fitting replacement for the current Gurus drummer with his incredibly hard and stiff style ... the Baker vs Bonham debate arose and the following was noted. (both of us having enormous respect for Bonham and Zeppelin) In the studio, was Bonham just following rigid guidelines (assumedly from Page) as to what to play and when? Most notable in tracks like Fool In The Rain or The Ocean The patterns seem very stiff and regimented, changing and predetermined bars almost like they were programmed or conducted. The latinesque and shuffle grooves in these tracks seem to be cut n pasted in. This opposes the ad lib (but still structured) recording styles of the likes of Ian Paice or Ginger Baker (both who have questioned Bonhams groove, especially Baker) and obviously crazy guys like Moon. Was Bonham a more technical version of Rudd? could Carmine Appice have done the job just as well? (he certainly thinks so) does premature death Influence history or credibility ...... does it matter? Ultimately the question is - was Bonham created by Zeppelin (or Page)? or did he forge the sound they created? ...... as with Paice, Baker or Rudd of course there is no answer, just discussion :) now if youve ever heard the Drunken Drummers discuss anyones talent backstage ... youll understand its heavily drenched in over confidence and ego. and so as to ruin all credibility .... inappropriately, heres the Drummers:)
