American Express (God rest their soul) at first phone call said they must mail a name change form to the address on file which I must complete, attach my marriage certificate and fax it back. (FAX? Who uses fax any more?) So I did. Using a free online fax service. When attempting to use the (former name) card, the PIN issued was invalid. I call to inquire. Apparently a system glitch sent the same invalid PIN to a number of customers. We sorted out my proper PIN and he asked if there was anything else he could do for me. I asked if he could change my name on my account and issue a new card? He: I see the name change request documents here but the system wont allow me to reissue a card without seeing official identification in your new name. Your marriage certificate only shows your former name. ***Face palm*** Me: Youre saying that my legal reason for changing my name (marriage) has been documented but thats not enough? He: Yes, it doesnt make sense to me either, but if you can fax me a copy of your drivers license in your new name I can make the change. Just download a name change request form... (he didnt have to mail it... its always been available online... ) Dear Lord, please save us from the bureaucrats whove abandoned government jobs and taken up residence in the AMEX policy department.
