fivethirtyeight/datalab/the-racial-gap-on-global-warming/ There are two things I want to extract from this article, and neither one is justified: 1. I want to believe that this finding proves that oppressed people (like non-whites) are more likely to recognize oppression (like political elites plan to drive us into climate catastrophe). 2. I would also like to believe that this finding demonstrates something Ive thought for a long time: that the consensus myths of race and poverty correlating with political disengagement and ignorance is bunk. It would be nice to know that poor and minorities people are *disenfranchised* rather than *disengaged*, and that it is the absence of access to good information in conjunction with the active promotion of misinformation that produces the stereotypically naive poor American. Unfortunately, this article doesnt actually provide evidence for these assertions. In fact, I had a hard time finding *any* decent evidence in favor of them; it doesnt seem to be something anyone knows how to measure competently. This particular piece of work suffers for not controlling for the urban-rural divide amongst Democrats, which almost certainly accounts for the race gap. But now Im interested: Id love to know whether or not people who are systemically maligned are more likely to recognize oppression and participate actively in progressive politics once adequate controls are put in place.
