for all of you x Don’t Let Them Forget. 15th January 2015. In a poem, Heather wrote a line: “What do poets do”? ‘Til then I never thought of it but know I write for you Your compliments and comments encouraged me to write At first, the Referendum, where we thought we’d win outright But instead of just laying down, we rose as a family of friends We each made a silent promise, we’d fight this to the end. From North to South and East to West, we met up every day From leafleting to canvassing it was smiles all the way With friendships formed you knew would last, it energised our souls And the world looked to Scotland as we headed to the polls Every day the sun would shine even in the sleet and snow Meetings, hustings, rallying to, the place you had to go. I never heard a murmur, no, not a single sound Exhausted, sleepy, hungry, you turned the political world around Reporting back when you got home, what happened on the night Then off to bed and up at dawn to carry on the fight. Smiling words fell, page on page, as you plotted your next meet Or just knocked on the doors you saw in every single street The laughter tore through pages and on facebook every night You were buzzing with this new found pride and set Scotland alight. At work, in shops, that’s all you heard: Are you voting Yes or No? I miss those happy, smiling times, we lost but we all know That those friendships weren’t for nothing, we each gained a thousand friends Some of whom we’ll never meet but we’d trust them to the end But when you met someone you only knew by name, your heart jumps out your skin And that precise excited moment is still with you deep within I was with you every step and feel what you all felt Devastation and bewildered They’re part of that one special year and as friends they still remain So plan your course and plot your moves; We’re On The Road Again. All those doors you knocked on, all the folks you met Remind each one of all the lies, don’t let them forget Each one of you is special, backed by your special friends So let’s do this one together and buck these voting trends. Westminster has to pay a price, they were shown to lie and cheat Tell that to all your neighbours and to all you meet and greet And get The Yes signs up again with your Saltires flying high And rid Scotland of red Tories, kiss all of them goodbye Let Scotland’s voice be rightly heard in London’ house of power And let them know democracy from voices that are ours Oh I write with pride, I feel that pride, a pride that comes from you And this proud hand will always write for you – That’s what poets do.
