for the first time in my life, i became a fan of a celebrity, whose words in knew before her bodily form. Mallika Sherawat. my new ItemNumberOne Hero! not for Item Numbers she seems to have graced the Bollywood screen with (i dont own a TV and havent paid to go see a HIndi movie since Sholay (Hema Malinis Bhartanatyam trained footwork on shards of broken booze bottle... hmmm, we didnt know it was an item number!). regardless of Ms Sherawats theatrical abilities, her vocal expression of the status of women in India is a welcome tirade, not in some filmi tv show, but in taking on journalists live (one woman and a man, both with seemingly medieval attitudes on the HUMAN right to safety of EACH WOman). i admire her for not letting it slide, as most celebrities in India do. they only ignore blatant issues in the society in any serious film about ANY of the issues that India is faced with, but the top actors, and cricketers, never to be left far behind the silverscreen stars, participate in promoting RACIAL+GENDER stereotypes that harm the self-esteem of MILLIONS of wheatish skinned girls in Dravidian India. Shah Rukh Khan (aka SRK to crores of his clueless fans) pocketed millions (in USD) for being a Brand Ambassador for a SKIN WHITENING product aimed at the highly vulnerable young Indians who are made to feel inferior because of the darker skin. this in 2013 India. it is also ironic, that Ms Sherawat also does extremely demeaning, often crossing the boundary between sleeze and dance, item numbers, which BILLIONS of children around the world watch, and try to imitate in the thousands of Miss This or That contest... wonder what she would say to that?
