NAS conferences – autumn 2013 Women and girls on the autism spectrum, 1 October 2013, Leeds Autism is an overwhelmingly male diagnosis – it has even been described as the "extreme male brain". But why do women only make up one in four of those diagnosed with autism? This conference, organised by the National Autistic Society, will examine the unique challenges facing women and girls with autism. Our programme of international experts will discuss the implications for future research and practice, including prevalence rates and differences in presentation. Our keynote speaker is Jennifer O’Toole, the author of two internationally successful books and an Aspie mum with an Aspie daughter. She will talk about what might be going on emotionally and intellectually when girls with autism exhibit certain types of behaviours. To book your place visit: autism.org.uk/conferences/women2013. Autism and sensory processing in everyday life, 8 October 2013, London EARLY BOOKING RATE ends 26 July 2013 This National Autistic Society conference will help to develop a greater understanding of sensory processing and how difficulties with sensory integration can impact on a person with autism. As well as an introduction to sensory processing and sensory integration, our expert speakers will also present an overview of the current research. We will look at the main sensory integration approaches in practice and how these can be applied in everyday environments plus tools and strategies that can be used to create programmes and make simple changes, so that people with sensory difficulties can live as independently as possible. However, unlike with other diagnoses, autism can exacerbate some of these co-existing conditions or make it more difficult to diagnose and support people who have them. This conference, organised for the first time by the National Autistic Society, will look at some of the more common co-existing conditions that can affect people with autism. Key speakers will give insights into a wide range of issues, including ADHD, epilepsy, visual impairment, hearing impairment, depression and sleep disorders. This event is a great opportunity to gain an understanding of complex needs in autism. To book your place visit: autism.org.uk/conferences/complexneeds2013. Pathological Demand Avoidance, 20 November 2013, London Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome (PDA) is a lifelong disability. The main difficulty for people with PDA is their avoidance of the everyday demands made by other people, due to their high anxiety levels when they feel that they are not in control. This National Autistic Society conference will give you a greater understanding of PDA and an opportunity to discuss strategies and techniques that will help you support people with the disorder. You’ll be able to hear the latest research on the changing diagnostic understandings, as well as an overview of educational strategies for teachers.
