found my handwritten notes as student President of Edinburgh University Economics Society introducing Amartya Sen in The Goldfish Bowl 1977 and referencing articles where he discusses capital theory with Bhuddha and a chapter where he describes Nero fiddling Pareto-optimally while Rome burns! the opening quotation i used was found that morning in an address given by the economist Frank Knight shortly before our welcome committee got stuck in the Edinburgh University Library lift for an hour and had to communicated with Sen by Emergency Telephone before meeting up with him at the Goya exhibition at National Gallery of Scotland under a giant Vermeer donated by Adrian Coats who was also stuck in that lift with me and Anne Instone (Anne Scrope)! on the reverse side of the Sen poster is a interesting list of other invited speakers that Summer term - including a slide-show talk given by Richard Demarco on his Edinburgh Arts Europe 76 journey from Hagar Qim in Malta to Ring of Brogar in Orkney .... :)
