#freethekees this is the story of Greta from her Mom. On February 15th, when I met Jennifer in Milwaukee and picked up Greta, I thought to myself I have rescued many, many Kees over the years, this dog should only need to be me a short time and she will be able to be placed in a new forever home. WOW was I WRONG! I had in my van the most scared shell of a dog I have only seen pictures of or heard stories of dogs like this. Thankfully she had been at the boarding kennel for some time after being spayed so she was bathed and not horribly filthy and stinky like I had heard. When Greta came to me, she would not allow me to touch her at all. I sat on my bathroom floor until she realized I wouldnt hurt her. I was allowed to scratch her bald spot on her rump. She seemed to like that. She NEVER looked at my face, just stared at the floor. She had some access to my other dogs through the kid gate...she seemed to immediately like the other dogs. After 24 hours, she let me hold her face in my hands (still not looking at my face) and rub my thumbs up and down the sides of her head. She has permanent scars from dog bites on her face. She was so frightened and tense, I felt like hugging her but that would have sent her right over the edge. After about 3 weeks of this special treatment and all her time outdoors spent in my free standing outdoor kennel run, I decided seeing she seemed to like the puppy biscuits I use as a reward (I am certain she would like anything seeing she was so skinny when she arrived) so I bravely turned her loose in my 1 1/2 acre fenced yard. She didnt know what to do at first, then she took off. I tried to remain calm, worrying what if I couldnt catch her to get her back in the house? Well she romped with my crew of 11, she hops more than runs I believe due to her incorrect structure. But what a joy to see her! And the best part, when I said Greta do you want a biscuit?, she happily bounced right to me and took a biscuit. I sat down on the stoop knowing not to grab at her collar. When I gave her a biscuit, she allowed a butt scratching....she has never not come running to me, even without a biscuit in my hand. After about 2 1/2 months, she finally started looking at my face when we talked. I have told her many times that I am still waiting for my kiss, which she has never given me. She instead acts like a cat (the dogs have their resident cat Hazel who was a rescue herself), she rubs herself on my face and body when laying down. At the 2 1/2 month marker, I also started letting her sleep loose in the bedroom with Seeker, Tess, Berlyn and Tori. Greta starts her night out by laying on top of me just so Seeker knows she is moms girl! They still tussle to this day by taking turns laying on my head to get the closest to me! When I traveled to North Carolina for the Keeshond National, I left two dogs how for my neighbor to watch and 9 others that were showing and Greta took the long trip. That was the best thing I could have done for her. A week away from her safety zone, having to rely on me, Sherri Kovach and Billy Rodriguez (two strangers to Greta) for her care that week. She seemed to like Billy, the first man as she is petrified of men. She met some many people, heard & saw so many new things and by weeks end, she was happily walking without Seeker by her side and wagging her tail high on her back, not drooping like the first several months. She has taken other trips, has found another man she is not afraid of, my significant others nephew Loryn. She is helping with my current litter of 10, she has such patience with the babies who are 6 weeks old. She gets along so well with my entire crew which tends to change depending if I have dogs coming to the house for show weekends. She has bonded so strong & hard to me, I couldnt break that bond at this point seeing I was her first human bond so I adopted her and she will remain with me...maybe at some point the right new person or family will come along, til then shes my baby girl Greta.
