fresh dates from mecca when my wife majeda went to perform hadj pilgrimage,i requested her to bring some fresh dates.although processed and dried dates are available aplenty here in bangladesh,i have neither seen nor tasted garden fresh ones. the date season is nearly over in saudi arabia but after much searching with the help of my brother in law dr.naim khan she maanaged to buy some.here they are in pics1,2.fresh date is indeed marvel of a fruit.nothing can be sweeter than this fruit and it is so delectably crunchy with a hint of astrigency.the fruit is packed with vitamins ,minerals and dietary fiber. for those who are on an arduous journey like mountaneering or long hitch hiking,i think date is one of the best provisions for them .because so small weight and volume carries so much energy.i wonder whether khalids(ra) invincible cavalry men carried with them dates when they made a lightenng dash of 1000 miles through the syrian deserts to meet and defeat the largest concentrstion of byzantine army at yarmuk. date tree is a prolfic producer.one tree can produce as much as 250 kg of fruit(pics 3).apart from the middle east ,iran and california date also grows in pakistan and india.but the best dates are undoubtedly grown in saudi arabia.in bangladesh date that grows is of wild type.so the trees are employed for extracting juice from which juggery and molases are made.some years ago i saw in the news paper that some enterprising person has successfully grown arabian dates in the sandy char land of brahmaputra river.that must be a great feat.whether grown here or not dates will continue to be available here at a reasonable price because they are grown aplenty round the world.fresh,juicy and crunchy dates are however another matter in terms of availabilty.
