from JWGs DONE AND NOT BEGUN Zwerglipatch May 15, 2011 10:58 a.m. Being a Sunday, while Dad Meyer was at church, I cleaned out a couple of shelves in the linen closet. Old bandages and dust rags and curtains and towels have been thrown away. Why are we impelled to keep what we know will never be used? I, myself, have way too many things. As I have written, I am attempting to downsize what I do have. My main quest is an old quest: going in the attic, once again, to sort and throw away. In the cold and heat, one tends to heave things in the attic. Even when placed in the proper spot, disorder soon takes over. My Holiday corner needs much attention. Today is rainy and cool. A perfect attic day. The next couple of days will be the same. I will see what I can do. This morning, I got up and made some apple muffins and a cornbread. René and I had a yummy breakfast. As he goes through our personal papers (bank, etc.), I went through the linen closet. Two shelves of sheets await me. Some other day I will see what is there. This is not the first time in my life I have had to go through someone’s papers. And, things. As it stands with my personal “stuff”, I pity the person who will have to sort through boxes and shelves. I have often thought, as you know, that I am about to move to some remote place and can only take a small amount of personal items. What holds me back is the fact that culling what I do have seems, well, cruel. Not only to me — to those who shared their special “stuff” and papers with me. This is a dilemma. I can easily toss stuff out. I could just as easily sell stuff. My problem is having the — yes, I will say it — time to do it all. I have none. My projects grow. My responsibilities are larger. If I could turn Zwerglipatch Cottage and Gardens into an Artist’s Getaway, I, and René, would have a perfect setting with all the amenities we would need. Unfortunately, we both cannot see that happening any time soon. Each day we do throw something away. We are letting go of much which has loaded us down. It is time to share what we do have. For example, our large rice cooker and the roasting pan with its cover (enamel) was placed on the street yesterday. I placed them with their directions in a plastic bag so the rain would not harm them. Sure enough. This morning, they were gone. Some lucky person has a new rice cooker. I am glad it will be used. Gracious, sitting down and writing these few words has spurred me to go into the attic and start that project. I am sure that I will find many things to share. I do know that there are boxes to throw away. Papers that are no longer needed. Excuse me. I better get started.
