Principal: Seniors In World History with Mr. Joseph Dibs, 92, the seniors are discussing modern trends of the late 20th and early 21st Centuries including terrorism, extreme nationalism, ethnic violence, religious fundamentalism, overpopulation, migration, mass consumerism, environmentalism, regionalism, technology, and globalization. Certain topics we discussed included the Rwandan genocide of 1994, the breakup of Yugoslavia, the political issues surrounding Russia and the former Soviet republics, the rise (and sometimes failures) of Asian economies, religious fundamentalism in the Middle East and Asia, and the formation of the European Union. In Theology with Fr. James Kuroly, 98, the seniors are learning about the Church and the Age of Enlightenment. The term enlightenment has been applied to a period when man was revolting against God and placing himself in Gods place. We see this in strong governments and strong leaders such as Louis XIV. From this the Church is faced with the challenges of heresy (Jansenism and Quietism), new scientific advances (Galileo) and a new Philosophy (Descartes and Rationalism.) Juniors In English with Mrs. Kath Gluszak, the juniors are studying the mechanics of poetry, including rhyme scheme, meter, and foot. They are then applying these mechanics, along with their literary analysis skills, to selected American poets like Frost, Whitman, Eliot, Dickinson, Moore, and Cruz. In Theology with Fr. Kuroly, the Juniors are continuing the discussion on the Theology of the Body by John Paul II . They are taking his theology and applying it to everyday situations. Lower House – Fr. James Kuroly, 98, Asst. Principal Sophomores In Mr. Terrence Kumars (05) Living Environment class, sophomores are currently applying their knowledge of inheritable DNA and meiosis in order to understand the work of Mendelian genetics and genetic engineering. In Geometry with Mr. William Scharen, the sophomores are studying coordinate geometry, students are finishing proving quadrilaterals are parallelograms, rectangles, rhombii, or squares. They have been learning and defining the properties that makes each shape so unique and then applying that towards their knowledge of the slope, distance & midpoint formulas to prove which shape is which when given coordinates. In Mr. Jeremy Reyes’ Living Environment class, sophomores just finished the unit on Ecology. They will eventually be able to tie and apply aspects of the Living Environment curriculum to Human Impacts on Ecology. These two units are important tied to their semester project. Freshmen In the freshmen Introduction to Theology course with Fr. James Rodriguez, students are reviewing last weeks quiz on divine revelation and the foundational place and interpretation of scripture in the early church. They learned about heresies like Gnosticism and sola scriptura, as well as some controversies surrounding each. This week, they will learn about the next theological stages in revelation: the incarnation of the Word and the mystery of the Holy Trinity. In Earth Science with Mr. Reyes, freshmen recently completed the first half of Astronomy understanding Earths place in the Universe. Now, they are moving into the second half of Astronomy learning about the Motions of Earth, Moon, and the Sun. In Algebra I with Mr. Reyes, freshmen recently completed learning about Functions of Equality and Inequality and their graphs, including Systems of Equality and Systems of Inequality. Currently, they are close to completing learning about Exponents and their Functions.
