from Sarah V, an hour ago, on the blog comments. too good not to share. This concept of having a million followers and Pete Seeger is reminding me of a story about him I heard recently. Hopefully I get the gist of it right from memory: during the Spanish Civil War (towards the end, IIRC) he was invited to play at this huge stadium concert in Spain. And all the fans in the stadium knew his music, he was a supporter of their cause and etc. But the government that they were basically revolution-ing against came to him and said here is a list of songs you cannot sing tonight because they were too radical or they didnt like the politics. So he says Wow, that looks just like my setlist! and proceeds to walk out on stage in front of tens of thousands of people and say Well, the government says I am not allowed to sing these songs.... but they didnt say YOU couldnt sing them. Maybe you can help me? and he just started playing, and tens of thousands of people all knew the lyrics, and sang for him... now can you imagine how much more powerful and revolutionary that concert was for the attendees, doing it that way? What a message. He was an amazing man. And yes, social media can be a shortcut to profound connections like that. (amandapalmer.net/blog/20140405/)
