from anita ricky....I got interested in veganism about 2 years ago after meeting a vegan family who rescued farm animals. Soon after, I watched, The psychology of Eating Meat, and pretty much went vegan overnight. It was a real light bulb moment and I realised that by eating meat and dairy that I was causing suffering and death to countless innocent animals. After lots of research on how to go vegan, realised that I could be much healthier without meat and dairy in my diet. I think I was actually dairy intolerant. In fact, I think most people are dairy intolerant and suffer for their whole lives with bloating and belly aches, etc. Meat and dairy have been linked to a whole lot of western diseases, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. My mum was diagnosed with diabetes AND lupus around the same time and after reading, Dr Barnards guide to Reversing Diabetes, and The Lupus recovery Diet, decided to go vegan too. She went from not being able to get out of bed to now playing 18 holes of golf without ANY medication. We both love our vegan lifestyle but do find it hard to find the odd vegan product, living on the coast. We have a goal to try every veg restaurant in Melbourne and so far we have tried 3. The Veggie Bar, Yong Green and most recently, Gong De Lin ( where we had a 7 course vegan banquet) are all fantastic and I only wish we had at least one vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Geelong. I think people think we are extreme and missing out on something by going vegan but in fact it is the opposite. We didnt know how fantastic we could feel, until we went on a plant based diet. It is others who dont know what they are missing out on. I think it is great that it is getting more widespread as high profile people like Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Ellen, Jared Leto are going vegan. Our only regret is that we didnt do it sooner.
