from my FB Friend, Djelloul Marbrook WE ALL PROFILE, THE QUESTION IS WHAT WE DO ABOUT IT ————————————————————————————— Perhaps in a certain way the question is, Are you acclimated, are you acculturated? I grew up with black playmates. One of my closest boyhood friends was black. So of course that experience has shaped my life, my way of thinking. We all profile people. How could this be otherwise in a culture that still insists that the Marlboro Man is the American prototype, an anglocentric culture? Seen in this light, our discourse about racial profiling is misplaced, misdirected. We do profile, all of us. The question is what we do about it. What happens between the eye and the brain? The eye is made of the same substance as the brain; it’s the only body part of which that can be said. Is that encouraging? Because we live in a world where interaction is more commonplace the races of huankind are going to see more of each other. They have to. And that in itself is going to acculturate our perceptions of each other. But for now we have a press that continues to polarize and demonize, a press that refuses to admit it is part of the problem, a press that disdains introspection as much as it disdains historicity and context—a disconnecting press, in other words. And that is a big problem.
