from my son Sam....Why is it that all of the most famous women of jazz history were singers and all of the most famous instrumentalists were men? Were music fans of the jazz era more comfortable watching women sing or dance than they were watching women play the drums or the sax? Has this changed? Can you think of a woman who is famous today for playing an instrument for its own sake and not for singing or writing songs? Come to think of it, how often does modern pop culture celebrate anyone for simply playing a musical instrument? Is that just something we dont admire anymore? Is popular instrumental music dead? Do I blame punk rock? Yes I do.
