geekchiccinema is having a religious experience... This morning I was working on a new banner for my and Joanne’s website while listening to Chvrches. I first got into Chvrches when I saw them on the Jools Holland show. Having tuned in specifically for the Pixies, this group happened to be sharing the stage that night. My first thought was that they had a powerful mixture of upbeat pop melodies and fuzzy electronic atmospheres, and I liked it. Not long after that I heard them in the supermarket. That’s when I was thinking, yup, others heard what I heard. Supermarket says they’re going to be bigger than a little underground indie thing. Now for all those ridiculous people who think that an artist becomes less credible the more success they achieve… say what? Are you kidding me? Easy there, immature ones. So, do democracy and freedom of speech and human rights and all those wonderful things become less credible contributions to human society the more popular they become? You know my answer. Chvrches remain as blog-worthy as ever, chart presence or no chart presence. I’m so thankful they decided to use the archaic “V” in their name. Can you imagine how impossible it would’ve been to Google them by typing in “Churches Music” without getting pages upon pages of hymns and choral pieces? Not that there’s anything wrong with devotionals and hallelujah’s and all. I especially love old European church music. But when you’re in the mood for some electro, you need some electro, baby. I will also place Chvrches’ debut album on my list of coolest album titles with “The Bones Of What You Believe.” And thank you Lauren for that lovely piece you wrote about Kate Bush. The crazy thing is that living here in England, if Scotland votes “yes” for independence from the UK, Chvrches will become a foreign group. Ouch. Show some love, Celtic ones, for us good folks south of the border. I’m hurting over here. Joanne Stclair, check it. vimeo/70849253
