Having an agent is useful for making contacts; but so is putting yourself out there. Publishers love the big savings which come from hiring the average guy - provided he looks good shirtless! And these Talent Searches are great PR for the publishers; they gain valuable public exposure & thus the chance for more sales. All the top publishers release several themes each month: historical romance; modern romance; teen romance; etc. So they need a supply of guys to photograph; and the Average Joe can be more down to earth than a pro model with his many demands. Here average Joes attend a book fair to give the publishers agents a chance to evaluate how they would look in the cover art for upcoming novels. That the public is invited is good; a publisher is more apt to contract the guys who gets the applause of the attendees.
