ghananewsagency.org/ GNA wins most outstanding NRE media agency award Accra, July 18, GNA - Kasa Ghana, a non-governmental organisation on Thursday honoured the Ghana News Agency (GNA) for being the most outstanding Natural Resources and Environmental (NRE) media agency for the year 2012. The award was presented to the GNA at the 2nd Kasa NRE Media Dialogue and Awards ceremony held in Accra on Thursday. The GNA received a desktop computer, a universal power system and a citation as the prize. The citation by Kasa Ghana recognised the role played by the GNA on reporting on natural resources and environmental issues and for raising highly sensitive and neglected NRE issues for the attention of government, communities, civil society and the general public. Dr Messan Mawugbe, Founder, Centre for Media Analysis, said a survey conducted by the centre over NRE reportage in the media in 2012 revealed that GNA published 102 stories. He said other criteria that were used in the survey to determine the award winners were Behavioural Change, Policy Action, Public Education and Public Awareness and the GNA scored 32, 58, 38 and 68 per cent respectively. He said a research conducted from 2008- 2012 further revealed that media coverage of the NRE was 1 percent in 2008, 7 percent in 2009, 6 percent in 2010, 11 percent in 2011 and 7 percent in 2012. He urged the media to give much attention to issues of NRE especially in election years, as it is a major issue that needs the attention of the various political parties. Other award winners were Citi Fm, Daily Graphic, GTV and Ada Radio, whilst Mr Isaac Aidoo of the Finder newspaper was adjudged the most outstanding NRE Journalist of the year 2012. Mr Zakaria Yakubu, Programme Coordinator, Kasa Ghana, congratulated the award winners and called on other media organisations to highlight issues of natural resources and the environment in their reportage. Miss Christine Achieng, Assistant Country Director-Programme Quality, at Care International, commended the media for its vibrancy, adding that, it has a key role to play in promoting environmental sustainability and good governance of Ghana’s natural resources. She said Care International and Kasa would continue to collaborate with the media and support local civil society organisations in the context of strategic partnerships that can be demonstrated to have a more beneficial impact on local communities in the NRE sector. Mr Affail Monney, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, commended Kasa Ghana for its support to the media on issues of NRE. He appealed to other organisations and corporate institutions to support the media practitioners to scale-up their performance. Kasa- Ghana promotes concerted action and a more coordinated engagement of civil society organisation and media in the NRE sector, to assist government achieve equity, accountability and transparency in the governance of natural resources and the environment.
