given that the adverts on telly are moving towards gannin on holiday, and given that one of our site members mentioned that Consett steel was used in building that imitation Tyne Bridge in Sydney, Australia. I just canna resist this one from the Site Archives!! SUMMER HOLIDAYS - IN CONSETT I had to smile early this morning, when my Middle Daughter mentioned she was very tired. She had to go off with her Mam and partner, accompanied by Younger Daughter and his two offspring, on holiday. Early train needed, to catch a flight to Italy. Naturally, the little, or rather growing treasure, did not get too much sympathy from her Dad regarding the fatigue angle. Now, I should stress that I am not getting my violin out here, and plunging into maudling, mournful depression, when I started thinking my summer holidays as a Kid. Far from it! For a canny spell of my childhood, I used to catch a bus up to a place called Consett in County Durham, from a place called Shiney Row, well, also in County Durham. And it was brilliant. Two Aunties lived up there, one in Leadgate near the town itself, and the other right in the middle of the city of Consett itself! Food provided, naturally, and Fun, to say the least. One Aunty had a very, very big backyard, which meant you could play football in there by yourself for a canny long time, complete with your self-invented league fixtures. Strangely, Newcastle United happened to top my tables, for some reason. Outside of that massive backyard lay all kinds of things to do. For a start, obviously, cousins were knocking about - they still are, but have aged slightly now!! We could play football - footy again, I am afraid - on some fields, take in the passing railway engines taking the steel and ore out of that town against quite a noisy background. And better still, either via Aunty or Uncle tours Ltd, or just via the cousins and their mates, I could end up in the countryside itself on the moors. Best not to report some of the activities that occurred there - mmm, seemed a lot of poaching and God Knows What Gannin On. Obviously, it was not always total bliss. That steel town tended to spew out the red dust, which impacted upon the Aunties washing lines, and possibly on me, looking back! Not that I was bothered about that, like, but it seemed like some kind of Red Storm had broken out. It had! Suppose it never did me any harm, like, and please, nobody make any comment on that, eh. In short, I loved my summer holiday escape route to Consett. And given it was only about 10 miles from Shiney Row, a nice little exciting bus trip or whatever, it was easier than getting to northern Italy. Just as good really. For me anyway. As a Kid. tarah Brian ps I did however get abroad once at 14, to Belgium, but that was in a football team. At 15, too, to Malta. In a tennis team. But Consett did for me in those younger years. See ya.
