goddess_enigma Collapse I was living in oakdale at the time this happened, and I remember the press coverage of the trial, and from what I recall, the evidence overwhelmingly pointed to his having started the fire. Witnesses reported seeing him come around the outside of the house carrying one or more flammable liquid containers right before it became engulfed in flames. There were testimonies under oath of his public displays of anger toward her. There were rumors of some stalking or her refusals of his efforts at intimacy with her. At the time at least the public was convinced this guy was a perpetrator of a heinous crime, that of starting a fire that took the lives of two innocent children and their mother. Maybe it was sensationalist reporting, maybe it was the key facts as presented at trial, and I believe no one would cop a plea were they not guilty to some degree. A plea is an admission of a lesser crime in exchange for a shorter sentence when the prosecutor knows you are guilty but because of technicalities and a knowledge of trial court proceedings are doubtful they can win with a jury. We as the public at the time felt no remorse or inhibitions in sending this guy to prison for his crimes.
