The political apparatus needs men whose competence lies in entertainment, public speaking, or charisma rather than in sound reasoning. It finds such men—entertainers at heart—and sets them in motion forming men’s opinions from a media platform. In this capacity they are cheated out of the healthy exercise of their talents and wind up deluding themselves and others, conflating personality with wisdom. Through this process, men like Glenn Beck are exploited just like the propagandized, although in a slightly different way. I’m glad to see Beck making these changes, even expressing some regret at his past. I’m glad he is now able to move on to work in an area where his talents can be properly utilized, helping people through entertainment rather than hurting them through rhetoric.
